Dutch Longcase Clock

I snapped this wonderful Dutch Longcase clock when I was on holiday and went to Parliament House in Canberra, Australia. The inscription on the wall next to it says "Long case Dutch clock made in 1763. Gift of the Commonwealth and people of the Netherlands to the people of Australia, 1968".

The quality of the clock case is simply exquisite. I think the case is made from Walnut, and it has some fine quality inlay decoration. It is a very tall clock, much taller than me and I am 6 foot tall.

The painted scene underneath the dial is I assume a typical Dutch village from the era, not sure where it could be? I wish there was a bit more information I could tell you about the clock but it was just sat there at the top of the stairs of the Parliament building looking very regal.

Dutch Longcase

Hi Paul, I live in Canberra, Australia and I too have seen this wonderful clock. There really isn't much information on it at all is there? Just a tiny little card stuck on the wall with a couple of lines about the clock being a gift from the Dutch.

I am going to try to find out a little more about the clock from the Parliament, but don't hold your breath, you know what public servants are like! Anyway, I agree it is a magnificent longcase.

Rob
