Antique Chelsea Clocks are primarily attributed to Joseph H. Eastman, who even although we know a fair bit of his history, there is undoubtedly more to learn. Eastman was born in 1843 and before he was ever involved with his Chelsea clock designs he had dealings with many more companies.
His early years are shrouded in mystery, but we do know that he was a watchmaker in Boston during the period 1867 and 1880. Eastman was not just a watchmaker; he also made and sold clocks, tools and supplied the watch and clock making trade with machinery and parts.
Some of the clock making companies that Eastman was involved with in some way or other was the Harvard Clock Company (c.1880), which then changed its name to become the Boston Clock Company in 1884. In 1895 a company was formed in Eastman's name, the Eastman Clock Company in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Although this venture didn't last long - it was sold in 1896 - this factory was the first that gave birth to clock manufacture in Chelsea, Mass.
During the short time that the company produced clocks there, they were able to demonstrate their expertise at making good quality and reliable movements, so much so that the military and especially the U.S. Navy were impressed by the clocks they purchased from them.
Taking the place of the Eastman Clock Company factory was the Boston Clock Company, and that only lasted for another seven months. However, the Boston Clock Company is known to have produced at least parts and maybe complete clocks that were later sold as from the Chelsea Clock Company. Eastman is therefore credited with at least the designs for the earliest of antique Chelsea clocks, even if he was not involved with the actual Chelsea Clock Company itself.
A little more needs to be said about Eastman, in that it was an idea of his to incorporate a watch movement inside a clock case, thereby improving the accuracy and usability of the clock and making it far more 'user-friendly'. At this time most pendulum clocks still had to be correctly set up. They were quite temperamental and any variance from vertical would cause wildly inaccurate operation or a worst, the clock would stop.
At this point one Charles H. Pearson surfaced and it is he that formed the Chelsea Clock Company as we know it today. One thing Antique Chelsea Clocks are famous for is their build quality, and many still believe that Chelsea produces the World's finest clocks. From their very early beginnings Antique Chelsea Clocks have been used in a wide variety of applications, from war time Naval clocks to peace time civil engineering projects.
Antique Chelsea Clocks were used extensively throughout World War II, primarily aboard Naval shipping and also by the Army. One thing the company also did was extensive research and development of clocks and time measuring mechanisms used for control systems, depth measuring equipment and related applications.
Now especially famous for their marine clocks, Chelsea is still operating and producing fine quality clocks today. Using a Worldwide distribution network no matter where you are in the world, you will be able to buy either new Chelsea Clocks or a genuine Antique Chelsea Clock.
